1. New contributions about the academic, theoretical aspects

The thesis has shown that the research on urbanization in the relationship with FDI has firm theoretical basis. The thesis has systematized the key issues and developed a theoretical framework for studying the influence of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner.

The thesis has developed criteria system (5 groups of criteria) as the base for a quantitative assessment of the influence of FDI on urbanization.

The thesis has raised four factors determine the level and tendency of the influence of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner including: group of factors of strategies, socio-economic development planning, urban planning; group of factors of policies attracting, using and managing FDI; group of factors of the development degree of the economy and the factor of foreign investors.

2. New findings and proposals based on the results of research and survey of the thesis

Results of the research and survey of the influence of FDI on urbanization in Da Nang show that:

The impacts of FDI on economic and social development and urbanization in each country, each locality is phenomenon that exists objectively in the context globalization. One of the important reasons enabling the process of urbanization in Da Nang to develop fast is the attraction of FDI. The thesis has clarified 6 positive impacts and 3 negative impacts of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner.

The thesis analyzes the existing impacts of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner in Da Nang. FDI increases scale and speeds up of urbanization; strengthens the modernization of economy and urban space; modernizes urban society; affects the urban environment and national security. FDI also indirectly affects urbanization by stimulating and attracting domestic investment. Da Nang has manyproper policies and gradually implement these policies successfully. However, there remain many problems which have not thoroughly solved in terms of both policy and policy implementation. The positive impact level of FDI on urbanization is not strong enough, while there are still negative impacts. The thesis analyzes causes of success and limitations in promoting the impacts of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner in Da Nang.

The thesis focuses on proposing viewpoints, orientations and solutions to promote positive influences and limit negative effects of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner in Da Nang towards 2025. Considering the orientasions, Da Nang should have strong innovation in the structure of attracting FDI in the direction of enhancing investment projects of large scale, modern technologies associated with potential strategic partners. Of the six groups of solutions, the author pays special attention to measures of promoting the roles of government in building sustainable urban planning and orientations to attract FDI, as well as directing the implementation of policies to attract, use and manage FDI.

INTRODUCTION

1. The necessarity of the thesis subject

In urban development, urbanization is an important changing process which has deep significance. In the period of globalization today, the urbanization process of the cities all over the world are strongly influenced by FDI. Da Nang is not out of this general trend. Under the influence of FDI, the urbanization process in Da Nang takes place quickly, creating important premises for the development of economy, urban areas and society. However, besides positive effects, FDI also causes some negative effects to the urbanization. But, at the international class as well as local class, this issue still faces many problems in both theory and practical activities. There has been no scientific project to study the effects of FDI on urbanization in the country as well as in Da Nang. FDI is an important factor promoting urbanization process but Da Nang has not taken advantage of this effect efficiently to attend to urbanization. It is very important and urgent issue to find out orientations to attract FDI and solutions to develop the positive impacts and limit the negative impacts of FDI on urbanization in Da Nang. In this context, the author chooses "Influence of Foreign Direct Investment on urbanization in a sustainable manner in Da Nang" as the subject of doctoral thesis.

2. The target of the research

Thanks to forming rationale and practical evaluation about the impact of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner, the author raises the orientations to attract, use and manage FDI; proposes measures to effectively promote positive effects and limit negative effects of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner in Danang till the year of 2025.

3. Research object and scope of the thesis

* Object of the thesis: The thesis focuses on studying FDI and its impact (both positive and negative impacts) on urbanization in a sustainable manner in Danang; And it also proposes the measures to improve the impact of FDI on urbanization process in Danang.

* Scope of the thesis: a) Content: Positive and negative impacts of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner in Danang b) Space: The thesis studies the impacts of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner in Danang (because of the limitation on information about Paracel, the author only focuses on studying six urban districts and Hoa Vang district, not researches Paracel island district yet). During the process of researching, the author also has observation in the relationship with central coastal area of Vietnam and the whole country) Time: Current situation of the research in the period of 2005 - 2013; propose solutions till the year of 2025.

5. New contributions of the thesis

About the theory: The thesis helps to clarify some theoretical issues about the impact of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner to cities in the conditions of Vietnam; propose system of criteria to assess the impact of FDI on urbanization in a sustainable manner.

About the practice: The thesis assesses the current status of the influences of FDI on urbanization; gives recommendations, perspectives and orientations to attract FDI capital till the year of 2025, proposes measures to promote the positive effects, limit the negative effects of FDI on urbanization in a more sustainable manner in Da Nang in the next period.
